Neonatal Neurology
The inpatient neonatal neurology consult service was developed in August 2023 by Dr. Stephen Walker and provides longitudinal neurologic care to infants in the UAB Regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit / Continuing Care Nursery (120 beds) and the Children’s of Alabama Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (48 beds).
Common conditions treated:
- include neonatal seizures
- neonatal encephalopathy
- intraventricular hemorrhage
- acute ischemic stroke
- cerebral venous sinus thrombosis
- meningitis/encephalitis
- congenital brain malformations
The neonatal neurology service works in concert with the pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation team as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapists to manage long term sequelae, including cerebral palsy and neurodevelopmental delay.
Following discharge, NICU graduates with neurologic symptoms are seen periodically in the neonatal neurology outpatient follow-up clinic until at least 3 years of age, at which time care may be transitioned to other pediatric neurology specialists if required.
