First Time Seizure Clinic

The UAB Pediatric Neurology at Children’s of Alabama First Time Seizure Clinic is a specialized clinic reserved for children ages 6 months to 18 years who:

  • have experienced a first-time suspected unprovoked seizure with return to baseline and were evaluated in the Children’s of Alabama Emergency Department with an ED referral placed to be evaluated in the First Time Seizure Clinic
  • have not been evaluated by another neurologist for concern for seizure in the past
  • have not previously been diagnosed with epilepsy (or seizure disorder)
Purpose of this Clinic:

This clinic allows us to determine the type of seizure, identify any potential causes, and what type of further testing may be needed. Not all children who experience a first-time seizure will go on to develop epilepsy. Our goal in First Time Seizure Clinic is to identify children who are at high risk of having another unprovoked seizure and go on to develop epilepsy. This clinic visit also allows us to provide important education to patients and families regarding seizures and epilepsy.

What to expect:

You will see a pediatric neurology nurse practitioner in collaboration with one of our pediatric neurologists. A thorough medical history and neurological evaluation will be performed. Any recommended testing (EEG/MRI) will be discussed and scheduled. In certain circumstances, there may be an opportunity for same day EEG testing, so we recommend being prepared to stay for the day.
