Childhood Cancer Survivorship Program

Childhood Cancer Survivorship Program: Taking on Life After Cancer (TLC)

The TLC Clinic – part of the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama – specializes in helping childhood cancer survivors lead healthy lives after treatment. With today’s advanced treatments, about 80% of children and teens with cancer now become long-term survivors. It is important for every cancer survivor to know what treatment they received and to understand how that treatment may affect their future health. Our goal is to provide cancer survivors with care that is tailored to their unique needs, to prevent problems from happening or to catch any problems early, when they are most easily treated.

To schedule an appointment or learn more about our services, please call 205-638-2145.

A visit to the TLC Clinic is a medical visit that is usually covered by insurance, just as a visit to an oncologist or primary care physician would be. However, coverage varies depending on the insurance company. Be sure to check with your insurance company before making an appointment.

Here's what you need to know about the TLC Clinic

The TLC Clinic is for people who were diagnosed with cancer or a similar illness before the age of 22 and completed their treatment at least 2 years ago.

Our clinic staff includes a team of professionals with expertise in childhood cancer survivorship, who will provide you with medical care, health education, psychosocial support, and assistance with other important issues, such as challenges you may be having at school or at work.

Before your appointment, we'll thoroughly review your medical records and send you a questionnaire to gather essential information about your treatment history and current health status.

You’ll receive a thorough evaluation, including monitoring for potential long-term effects of cancer treatment, and referrals to specialists if necessary. You'll receive a copy of your cancer treatment summary, information about possible long-term issues related to your treatment, personalized guidance about your health, and a comprehensive Survivorship Guidebook. The program also offers optional opportunities to participate in research to better understand and meet the needs of childhood cancer survivors.

We'll ensure seamless communication with your primary care provider, including a detailed summary of your visit and recommendations for ongoing care.

Most patients return to the TLC Clinic for yearly check-ups and ongoing monitoring for potential long-term effects of treatment, but follow-up is tailored based on treatment. We’ll let you know the follow-up schedule that is right for you.
