Hope and Cope: Family Support Team


A child’s diagnosis with cancer, brain tumor, or serious blood disease can turn a family’s world upside down. Our Family Support Team provide emotional, mental, and spiritual support during your child’s treatment journey.

Art Therapists:

  • Provide the child with a way to be creative and help deal with stress, fear, anxiety/depression
  • Help increase self confidence
  • Help improve social, learning and physical skills
 

Occupational Therapist:

  • Helps children relearn and develop daily skills and activities

Chaplain:

  • Builds relationships with patients and their caregivers
  • Helps them identify and use meaningful spiritual resources
 

Patient Representative:

  • Assists the family with questions and concerns during their visits

Child Life Specialists:

  • Help the child understand his/her diagnosis, treatment, and side effects
  • Prepare the child for medical procedures
  • Help promote coping through play and self-expression activities
 

Pediatric Psychologist:

  • Helps family/patient cope with the diagnosis and treatment
  • Helps with fear, depression, anxiety, compliance and pain

Coordinator, Communications and Marketing:

  • Coordinates community groups for various outreach and advocacy projects
  • Assists patient families interested in finding ways to help by acting as a liaison to Children’s Hospital Foundation
 

Physical Therapist:

  • Helps patient regain and develop strength, balance, coordination, and mobility

Expressive Specialists:

  • Supports the needs of the mind, body and spirit through: drawing, painting and crafting, creative
  • writing, dance, yoga, acting and drumming
 

School Liaison:

  • Serves as a link between the medical team, family, and school
  • Helps families advocate for their child’s unique learning needs

Hospital Teacher:

  • Provides daily group school or bedside instruction
  • Contacts the school for assignments during hospitalizations, and returns completed work
 

Social Workers:

  • Partner with patient/families to provide resources and support

Interpreter:

  • Assists with communication
  • Interprets information between English speaking staff and non-English speaking families
