Renal Care Center

The Renal Care Center at Children’s of Alabama is one of the largest comprehensive pediatric dialysis units in the United States offering acute and chronic dialysis therapies as well as the only pediatric dialysis unit in the state. The Renal Care Center provides a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment of kidney disorders in an environment fostering family-centered care.

A child whose kidneys do not work normally may need dialysis to filter waste and extra fluids from the blood. The Renal Care Center at Children’s of Alabama is equipped to provide:

  • peritoneal dialysis (PD)
  • hemodialysis (HD)
  • continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • kidney biopsies
  • plasmapheresis for infants, children and adolescents

While hemodialysis is typically done in a clinical setting, the Renal Care Center at Children's of Alabama is one of only three pediatric programs in North America that trains qualifying pediatric patients to perform hemodialysis at home using NXSTAGE Portable Dialysis Machine.

Our physicians and nurses are highly skilled to take care of very young infants, children and adolescents with kidney failure. The unit also includes a specially-trained dietician, tutor, social worker, family counselor, child life specialist and pharmacist. Located in the McWane Building on the Russell Campus, the Renal Care Center offers a comfortable setting for family education essential for the patient’s successful treatment.
