Lactation Consultant
The lactation consultant is another important member of the cardiovascular feeding team. The lactation consultant provides expert breastfeeding and lactation care to support breastmilk feedings and help reduce the risks of alternate infant feeding. Together with the medical team, Nutrition, Speech/Language Pathology, and Occupational Therapy, the lactation consultant will provide input into developing the most safe and effective feeding plan for the patient. Lactation consultants provide care in hospital routinely, while making appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community support resources.
There are many benefits in providing breastmilk to an infant with a cardiac diagnosis. Breastmilk contains infection fighting cells produced by mom to help grow and improve the baby’s immune system. Breastmilk is easier for the baby’s stomach to process and absorb than formula which help can help with future digestion and growth concerns. Breastmilk is a clear liquid and can be fed with less concern of aspiration.
Our goal is to provide every mother with proper education and support while promoting medical practices that encourage successful lactation. Lactation consultants are available Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. to work with mothers on developing an individualized pumping schedule and breastfeeding plan.
