Statement of Purpose and Mission
ACCREDITED CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM
MISSION: The mission of the Accredited Continuing Education Program of Children’s of Alabama is to continually strive to improve quality of care by providing high quality educational activities which are relevant to the hospital’s mission, the patient population served, and the types of services provided. These activities are to be carried out in a manner fully consistent with the standards for continuing medical education put forth by the American Medical Association and the essentials and standards of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.
PURPOSE: To fulfill this mission, the purpose of the Accredited Continuing Education Program is based upon the following:
- The goals as described in the Program for Maintenance of Certification (MOC)
- The goals established for advanced training in pediatric subspecialties
- The findings and recommendations of performance improvement activities performed by the Medical Staff of Children’s of Alabama
- The evaluation of new trends in healthcare, trends in referrals to the Children's of Alabama hospital and requests for reinforced knowledge on specific topics
CONTENT AREAS: Activities will emphasize clinical topics related to illnesses and conditions specific to newborns, children, adolescents, and young adults. In addition, activities will focus on research, the basic sciences, healthcare policy, advocacy, ethics, practice management and information technology, new technological advances, and hospital-identified needs.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Convenient, cost-effective, needs-based activities sponsored or jointly sponsored shall be developed and presented to members of Children’s of Alabama Medical Staff, as well as local, state and regional practitioners who seek continuing education on pertinent subject material. The members of Nursing and other Allied Health professions are also encouraged to participate in continuing medical education programs.
TYPES OF ACTIVITIES: Activities will include, but not be limited to, the sponsorship of lectures, symposia, workshops, conferences, skill practice sessions, demonstrations, live internet activities, regularly scheduled series, and enduring materials.
EXPECTED RESULTS: The expected result of the Accredited Continuing Education Program of Children’s of Alabama’s educational activities is that participating physicians enhance their knowledge, competence and skills in the subject area(s) offered, and apply the knowledge and skills to improve competence, performance and/or patient outcomes in their practice settings. All ACE activities are expected to result in improved quality and delivery of care to the pediatric patient as measured by physician questionnaires, hospital collected data, and/or local/state/national data on patient outcomes.
