Conflict of Interest
Each year, Children's of Alabama (Children's) asks its Trustees, Officers and certain designated employees to complete a Conflict of Interest (COI) Disclosure Statement. The statement is reviewed by Senior Management to ensure the interests and activities of each of these individuals does not conflict, appear to conflict, or compete with the interests of Children's. After each completed statement has been reviewed, the results will be presented to the Corporate Compliance Committee of the Board of Trustees.
Because Children's of Alabama is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, the Internal Revenue Service requires the hospital to disclose any potential conflict of interest on Form 990, which is submitted annually to the IRS.
Policy Statement
Children’s of Alabama Corporate Compliance Department develops and annually distributes the Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement to acknowledge Children’s employees' receipt and understanding of the Children’s Conflict of Interest Policy.
A conflict of interest may result when an employee, trustee, contractor/non-employee, or vendor has an outside relationship that may bear influence on or conflict with their responsibilities at Children’s.
Examples may include, but are not limited to:
- Political campaigning or distribution of political materials on Children’s property
- Gift giving or receiving related to Children’s work relationships
- Working or volunteering for another organization that may interfere or compete with work responsibilities at Children’s
- Selling or purchasing products or services for personal gain during work hours on Children’s property
Identifying and Managing Conflicts of Interests provides guidance on how to manage your most commonly encountered COI situations.
Detailed information can be found in the Conflict of Interest Policy (in Lucidoc) and the Code of Conduct on The Red Wagon, under Policies and Procedures.
If after reviewing those resources you are unsure that a conflict of interest exists, please contact the Compliance Officer at 205-638-7134 to discuss your concern.
If you become aware of a known or possible conflict of interest at any time during your work relationship with Children’s of Alabama, please contact the Compliance Department for a review of the circumstances. We will guide you on the need to complete an electronic COI Disclosure Form.
