Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)
The Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) is the inpatient ward at Children's of Alabama dedicated exclusively to the care and recovery of our cardiac patients with surgical and medical disorders.
This 16 bed unit offers private rooms with continuous monitoring of our patients' heart rhythms and oxygen levels. The CCU is staffed by a board certified Pediatric Cardiologist, advanced level Nurse Practitioners, and registered Cardiac Nurses with expertise in the care of all pediatric heart problems. Subspecialists are available for consultation on our cardiology patients around the clock.
In addition to the highest levels of medical care, the CCU offers ancillary services that cater to our patients' special needs. Expert teams help with placement of IV's, blood draws, and X-rays on the smallest of babies to minimize the discomfort of such procedures when they are needed. Feeding teams work with our neonates to make sure they receive appropriate nutrition for their recovery and growth. Therapists make sure all of our patients reach their physical and developmental potential. Playrooms for different age groups keep patients distracted and entertained.
The CCU is family friendly as well, with each patient room including a sleeping area, flat screen TV, and full private bathroom for parents. The spacious CCU waiting room offers a kitchen and washing facilities. Dedicated cardiac social workers, pastoral care, and counselors are available to help with financial and emotional needs that may arise for families during this stressful time in their lives. A sunny alcove overlooking Red Mountain offers a quiet space for parents to socialize.
