Vestibular and Balance Program
The Vestibular and Balance Program at Children's of Alabama is the first facility in the state to offer comprehensive clinical pediatric evaluations to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular disorders. Audiology is an active member of this program working alongside a team that includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, sports medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and ENT. Audiology now has equipment which allows us to test for balance impairments in children that may occur as the result of a variety of conditions, including concussion and hearing loss.
Audiological testing for our patients may include: Videonystagmography, Rotary Chair Testing, Video Head Impulse Testing, and Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials. As we know, the Vestibular System is comprised of input from our vision, proprioception, inner ear organs, and cerebellum. With the use of these assessments, we are able to determine if there is any inner ear involvement contributing to the patient’s primary balance concern. This, in turn, provides helpful information for the interdisciplinary Vestibular and Balance Team. The equipment was purchased in part by monies received from Wells Fargo through its annual Picks for Kids campaign.
