Maintenance of Certification Overview

All physicians need to recertify every few years as determined by their boards. This is called Maintenance of Certification (MOC). Pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists do this through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). More information can be found here: https://www.abp.org/content/maintenance-certification-moc. The ABP has four separate requirements which must be addressed to recertify including professional standing, learning and self assessment, cognitive expertise, and improvement in medical practice.

Part 1: Professionalism and Professional Standing (https://www.abp.org/content/professional-standing-and-licensure-part-1)
Hold a valid, unrestricted medical license and be in compliance with all ABP policies, rules, and codes.

Part 2: Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment (https://www.abp.org/content/lifelong-learning-and-self-assessment-part-2)
Participate in high-quality, unbiased educational and self-assessment activities determined by the ABP and other organizations.

Part 3: Cognitive expertise (https://www.abp.org/content/cognitive-expertise-exam-part-3)
Demonstrate specialty-specific skills and knowledge by passing the ABP assessment (either quarterly questions or proctored exam).

Part 4: Improvement in Medical Practice (https://www.abp.org/content/quality-improvement-part-4)
