Vascular Disorders and Neurointerventional Radiology
At Children’s of Alabama, children with disorders of the cerebrovascular system are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, hematology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. A state-of-the-art bi-planar angiography suite is utilized to provide cutting edge care to children with these blood vessel disorders. In addition to the medical management of stroke, our neurosurgery team has expertise in the treatment of arteriovenous malformations, cavernomas, aneurysms and Moyamoya disease. We are also the only pediatric center in Alabama that performs Gamma Knife radiosurgery for the treatment of arteriovenous malformations.
Neurointerventional radiology at Children's of Alabama provides diagnostic and therapeutic services tailored to the brain, spine and head/neck. We perform over 100 procedures each year including cerebral angiography, endovascular embolization, and percutaneous sclerotherapy. The service is staffed by four interventionists who collaborate hand in glove with COA Neurosurgery and allied specialties. The angiography suite is located in the Main OR, enabling hybrid open/endovascular procedures. It consists of a modern biplane fluoroscope (Phillips, 2023) with 3D angiography and Needle Guide capabilities. Standard NIR procedures are supplemented with unique programs such as rapid ventricular pacing, endothelial tissue sampling and infantile flow diversion.
