Spasticity Surgery and Treatment
At Children's of Alabama, the surgical treatment of spasticity and movement disorders is tailored to provide individualized care for children with conditions such as cerebral palsy. The program boasts specialized surgical interventions including selective dorsal rhizotomy and the implantation of baclofen pumps, which are aimed at reducing spasticity and improving motor function. Selective dorsal rhizotomy involves cutting nerve fibers that contribute to muscle tightness, thereby permanently reducing spasticity, while baclofen pumps deliver muscle-relaxing medication directly to the spinal fluid, which can be adjusted according to the patient's needs.
Children's of Alabama is recognized for its commitment to advancing care for children with cerebral palsy and other movement disorders. Notably, the institution was a charter member of the Cerebral Palsy Research Network, an initiative that collaborates on research and innovations to enhance outcomes for individuals with cerebral palsy. This affiliation underscores their dedication to integrating the latest research and treatments into clinical practice, ensuring that children receive the most advanced care available.
The program's comprehensive approach includes a team of multidisciplinary specialists who work collaboratively to assess each child's unique condition and coordinate care plans that optimize long term function.
