The Children's SHINE Clinic
Children's SHINE Clinic is a comprehensive center designed to address the needs of one of Alabama's most common health issues for children and adolescents, childhood obesity. Although many children and adolescents who are overweight are not physically ill, being overweight puts them at risk for more serious long-term health issues, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as psychosocial difficulties (e.g. peer teasing and depression).
The Children's Shine Clinic can assist children who are overweight and their families to establish healthy habits to achieve their overall goals through a variety of services:
Bariatric Surgery
- Will assist in evaluations for adolescents considered or interested in bariatric surgery. Those patients above 18 will be referred to UAB Weight Loss Medicine.
- Select adolescents who are severely overweight are considered
- Meet specific criteria:
- Physically mature
- Documented monthly visits discussing attempts to lose weight and evaluation by the interdisciplinary clinic.
- Evaluations for medical conditions that could be improved with weight loss surgery
Bright Bodies
Bright Bodies was designed and studied by the Yale School of Medicine. The program meets twice per week for 8-12 weeks depending on the season. One evening will be held in-person, including a nutrition or behavior change class and kids-only physical activity. The second evening includes kids-only physical activity from home via zoom. In order to participate, children must be 7-13 years old, have a BMI at or above the 85th percentile, and have one caregiver available to attend. Please contact the Bright Bodies team at 205-490-8087 or BrightBodies@uabmc.edu to learn more!
